Commentary
William’s parentage
In her 1687 will, Elizabeth Henman of Syndane in the parish of Lenham, spinster, named her “Sisters Jane the widdow of my Brother William Henman” and “Margreet the widdow of my Brother James Henman”, and her “Nephew John Thatcher”. She also named “William and Allen Henman the Two Sons of my Brother William Henman” and her late brother Allen Henman.
In his 1659 will, Richard Henman of Milton, Kent, named his brothers Thomas Henman, Allen Henman, William Henman, and James Henman, and his sisters Elizabeth Henman and Jane Thatcher.
In his 1634 will, Thomas Henman of Sindane in the parish of Lenham named his sons Thomas Henman, William Henman, Allen Henman, John Henman, James Henman, and Richard Henman.
The Lenham register records the baptisms of the above named children of Thomas between 1603 and 1626.
Taking the above evidence together, it is clear that Thomas Henman was William’s father.
The Lenham register records the burial in 1633 of Elizabeth Henman the wife of Thomas Henman. Thomas’s eldest child was baptized in 1602. The Willesborough register records the marriage in 1601 of Thomas Hinman and Eliz Chalcroft. In her 1629 will, Joan Chalcroft of Lenham named her daughter Elizabeth Henman, her son in law Thomas Henman, and Thomas’s children “Thomas Henman, Allen Henman, John Henman, William Henman, James Henman, Richard Henman, Joane Henman and Elizabeth Henman”. She refers to the younger Thomas Henman as her “nephew” and the younger Elizabeth Henman as her “neece”. “Nephew” and “niece” were commonly used for “grandson” and “granddaughter” in the period.
It is clear that William’s mother was Elizabeth Chalcroft.
