Commentary
Henrietta’s parentage
Henrietta was married in 1786 at St Mary, Newington, Surrey. Henrietta’s 1834 burial record gives her age at death as 69. This enables us to identify Henrietta’s baptism at St John Horsleydown, Southwark, Surrey, in 1765. The parents in that baptism are recorded as “Benj: & Harriot Johnson, Ironmonger”.
Several additional pieces of evidence make it very clear that this is the correct baptism:
Another daughter of Benjamin and Harriot, Charlotte, was baptized at St John Horsleydown in 1768. Charlotte Johnson was a witness at Henrietta’s marriage to Richard Hall.
Henrietta’s second son was named Benjamin. It was a common naming pattern to name the second son after the mother’s father.
Harriot’s father was Henry Nugent. This is shown by letters of administration for Henry Nugent of St John Southwark, Surrey, which were granted to his daughter “Harriot Johnson (wife of Benjamin Johnson)”. Henrietta’s third son was named “Henry Newgent Hall”.
Another daughter of Benjamin and Harriot was Emily Johnson, baptized at St John Horsleydown in 1770. Emily was married in 1802, when Henrietta’s husband Richard Hall and her sister Kitty Johnson were witnesses. Emily named a daughter Harriot, a daughter Henrietta, a son Benjamin Johnson, and gave another son the middle name Nugent.
Henrietta’s connection to James Swan
Perhaps the most likely explanation of the relationship between James Swan and Henrietta Johnson is that Henrietta was a servant in the household of James Swan before her marriage.
