Commentary
Sarah’s parentage:
The will of Benjamin Bach of New Town in the parish of Bromsgrove (made 1788, proved 1792) mentions his grandson William Bach of Birmingham, and William’s four sisters:
Sarah wife of Thomas Penn
Phoebe wife of James Jesson
Mary wife of Abraham Millington
Lydia Bach spinster
A few additional pieces of evidence indicate that the Sarah named in Benjamin’s will is the Sarah of this page:
Abraham and Mary Millington’s daughter Sarah Millington was a witness at the wedding of Sarah’s daughter Hannah Penn to William Ward in 1796 in Bromsgrove.
Sarah’s brother-in-law William Penn married the Lydia Bach above. Phoebe Jesson was a witness.
Sarah and her husband Thomas Penn, and the William Penn who married Lydia Bach, were both recorded as living at Gannow (Thomas in 1779, William in 1814). Benjamin Bach’s residence at the time of his burial in 1792 was “The Gannoe”.
Phoebe, Mary, and Lydia’s baptism records show that their parents were William and Mary Bach. (Lydia’s age at death, recorded in her burial record, confirms that her baptism is the correct one.) That the father is named William is consistent with evidence from the will of Benjamin Bach’s father Joseph Bach, which names his son Benjamin, “Sarah wife of Benjamin Bach and their son William”.
A definite baptism record for Sarah has not turned up yet, but Benjamin Bach’s will (as well as the other evidence above) makes clear that she was the sister of Phoebe, Mary, and Lydia, and therefore her parents were William and Mary Bach.
