Mary Holland

Events

Date of Baptism: 21 January 1598/9.

Place of Baptism: Manchester.

The baptism is recorded in the register.

Date of Burial: 25 June 1653.

Place of Burial: Manchester.

The burial is given in Crofton (p. 176).

Relationships

Father: George Holland.

George names a daughter Mary in his will. Mary’s husband Edward describes a nephew or great-nephew of this George as his “cousin” in his will, and another great-nephew as his “kinsman”.

Mother: Ann Hall.

George mentions his brother in law Adam Hall in his will. Anne’s father Geoffrey Hall names Anne and her husband George Holland in his will.

Spouse: Edward Wroe. Married 26 November 1616 in the cathedral at Manchester.

The marriage is recorded in the register. Edward’s wife Marie is named in the 1640 will of Edward’s brother Robert. Edward names Holland kinsmen in his will, whom I assume are his in-laws.

Children:

(Complete source citations for facts about the children on this page are currently outside of the scope of this project.)

John Wroe (buried 1 May 1654 in Prestwich) married Mary Heape about 9 May 1640.

Margaret Wroe (baptized 22 November 1622 in Failsworth chapel, Manchester - buried 7 November 1671 in Prestwich, Lancashire) married Thomas Heape about 9 May 1640.

Edward Wroe (baptized 6 December 1628 in Manchester - buried 21 June 1712 in Manchester) married Elizabeth.

Evidence

Mary took the Protestation oath in the chapel of Newton Heath in 1641. (Crofton, p. 133).

Commentary

Crofton records the burial of an Anne, wife of Edward Wroe of Newton, in 1627 in Manchester. Rather than Edward having been married several times - to a Mary, then an Anne, then a Mary again –, I am assuming that the Anne was the wife of a different Edward. The Edward who was the father of the children on this page was described as of Failsworth at Margaret’s baptism in 1622 and of Killshall Hall at Edward’s baptism in 1628.
