William de Furness (died about 1203)

Also known as William le Fleming.

Events

Date of Birth: uncertain.

Place of Birth: unknown.

The Lancashire VCH (8:sub Furness) states that William, as son and heir of Michael de Furness, attested a charter in about 1157. Farrer (Inquests, pp. 83-84) states that William was under age at his father’s death, which Farrer states was probably in 1175, after Michaelmas, and that “he appears to have attained his majority and had livery of his lands in 1186.” It would seem, if Farrer is right, that the William who attested the 1157 charter must be different from the William who had livery in 1186. However, Washington (p. 72) states that the evidence supports a birth date of about 1150, and that William’s father died in 1185 or 1186.

Date of Death: about 1203.

Place of Death: unknown.

The date is given by the Lancashire VCH (8:sub Furness). William, son of Michael le Fleming of Furness is recorded as being in the Pipe Roll of 6 John (1203-1204) (Farrer, Pipe Rolls, p. 185).
