John Pryce

Events

Date of Baptism: 1 September 1754.

Place of Baptism: Llandinam, Montgomeryshire.

Place of Death: unknown.

John made his will in 1791 and it was proved in 1802. He had a son baptized in 1801.

Relationships

Father: Edward Pryce.

Mother: Jane Lewis.

This relationship is not certain. The evidence supporting it is the place and date of baptism, the name given to John's eldest son, and the fact that Edward names John in his 1774 will, showing that he was still alive and in Llandinam at that time.

Spouse: Mary Williams. Married 19 November 1781 in Llandinam.

The marriage is recorded in the parish register. Mary was probably buried 9 May 1787 in Llandinam.

Spouse: Sarah. Married 21 April 1788 in Llandinam.

The marriage is recorded in the parish register. Sarah was a widow whose name is recorded as “Sarah Davies”. She probably had some kind of relationship with the Mary Lewis whose will is given below. She may be Sarah Clayton, the widow of the Evan Davies who died in Llandinam in 1786.

Children:

(Complete source citations for facts about the children on this page are currently outside of the scope of this project. Edward and John were the children of Mary. Thomas and the second Jane were the children of Sarah. The mother of the other two is unclear.)

Edward Pryce married Mary Clayton 24 September 1808 in Llandinam.

John Pryce (baptized 17 March 1786 in Llandinam)

Mary Pryce

Jane Pryce (born about 1794 in Llandinam; probably baptized 10 March 1794 in Llandinam - died 1863 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire) married James Powell Breese 15 July 1809 in Llandinam.

Rachel Pryce (baptized 27 June 1797 in Llandinam - buried 17 August 1831) married Edward Chapman 7 May 1824 in Newtown, Montgomeryshire.

Commentary

Comparing signatures on documents helps to confirm the relationships on this page:

  • The Jane Pryce who is a witness to the 1808 marriage of Edward Pryce clearly has the same signature as the Jane Pryce who was married in 1809.

  • The John Price who made the will in 1791 which was proved in 1802 clearly has the same signature as the John Price who married Sarah Davies in 1788. The John Price who married Mary Williams in 1781 did not abbreviate his first name, but every letter is formed in the same way.

The wills of John Price and of Mary Williams's mother also support the relationships given on this page.
