Henry Salusbury

Events

Date of Birth: unknown.

Place of Birth: unknown.

Date of Death: after 1437.

Owen (p. 154): “The dominant settler family in 1437 was the Salusbury family. Whereas only 44 acres, concentrated in the township of Lleweni, were held in 1334, a total of 660 acres were held in 1437, with the core again in Lleweni: 153 acres in the township, and 31 acres in the park. Lands occupied in other townships included 166 acres in the park of Segrwyd held by Agnes, the wife of Henry Salusbury, and Henry was one of the lessees of the manor of Kilford.” Lloyd (4:331) states that Henry was still living in 1421. However, "D.R.T." in Archaeologia Cambrensis (5:4:262) cites Harl. MS. 2129 recording an inscription on a tomb at the Carmelite Priory at Denbigh: Hic jacet Henricus Salusburie, Armiger filius et heres Radulphi Salusberie Ar: qui obiit silicet (?) die mensis Ao 1400. Et Agnes ux. ejus filia et heres Joh’is Curteys, Armigeri, qui obiit pr’ die Mensis Ao 1400: quor’ a’i’b’ p’picietur Deus. Amen.

Relationships

Father: Ralph (Rawling) Salusbury.

Mother: Margred ferch Ieuan ap Cadwgan.

Most sources (e.g. Bartrum Salesbury 1) give Ralph and Margred as the parents of the Henry of this page. The monumental inscription given in AC 1887, p. 262 gives “Henricus Salusburie, Armiger filius et heres Radulphi Salusberie Ar:” The relationship to Rawling is alluded to in the 1484 praise-poem to Thomas Salusbury given on Guot'r Glyn.net. Because of the long chronology, Smith (p. 6) suggests that there may be a missing generation in the line here, and proposes that the Henry Salusbury who was the son of Rawling was the father another Henry, who was the father of the Thomas who died in 1490. This second Henry doesn't appear in the contemporary poems addressed to the Salusburys, however.

Spouse: Agnes, daughter of John ab Arthur Curteis.

This relationship is shown by Bartrum (Salesbury 1). It is given by Smith (p. 6).
