Henrietta Hall

Henrietta was said (in Our Family History p. 73) to have been educated at Bath. A photograph of her survives.

Events

Date of Birth: about 1789.

Place of Birth: Enfield, Middlesex, or Hertfordshire, or Herefordshire.

The censuses, assuming the information is accurate, imply a birth date between 8 April 1788 and 30 March 1789. (Her age is given as 62 on 30 March 1851 and 72 on 7 April 1861.)

The 1851 census gives her birth place as Enfield, Middlesex. That is where she was baptized. However, the 1841 census has her born out of county (i.e., out of Middlesex), and the 1861 census seems to give her birth place as “Herefords:”. The latter possibly should be read as “Hertfords:”. (It looks more like “Herefords:”, but the writing and digital image are not absolutely clear.) Emma’s younger brother, Benjamin Ambrose Hall, was baptized at Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, in 1791. (Her elder brother, Richard Hall, was baptized at Enfield in 1787.)

Date of Baptism: 12 April 1789.

Place of Baptism: Enfield, Middlesex, England (Saint Andrew’s).

The date and place come from the parish register.

Date of Death: 28 July 1867.

Place of Death: Southam, Warwickshire, England.

Date of Burial: 1 August 1867.

Place of Burial: Napton-on-the-Hill, Warwickshire, England (St Lawrence’s Churchyard).

The date and place come from the burial register. [image at FamilySearch]

Relationships

Father: Richard Hall.

Richard Hall is named as Henrietta’s father in her baptism record. That this is the correct family is confirmed by the awareness shown by the children of Elizabeth Beatrice Cooke (Our Family History pp. 22, 88) that Sir Arthur Harris was their mother’s cousin. Sir Arthur Harris was the grandson of Henrietta Hall’s brother Benjamin Ambrose Hall, making him Elizabeth Beatrice Cooke’s 2nd cousin.

Mother: Henrietta Johnson (1765 - 1834).

Henrietta Hall’s mother is named “Henrietta” in her baptism record. Several lines of evidence converge to make it clear that her mother was Henrietta Johnson.

(1) Richard Hall and Henrietta Johnson were married in Newington in 1786, the year before the birth of H.H.’s eldest brother Richard. There is no other marriage between a Richard Hall and a Henrietta in the marriage records from the London Metropolitan archives (indexed at Ancestry.com) in the 20 years prior to 1787, and, in fact, no such marriage appears anywhere in the world in the FamilySearch index during the time period.

(2) The burial record of Henrietta Hall (née Johnson, as argued here), dated 16 June 1834, gives her age as 69. The Henrietta Johnson who married Richard Hall at Newington was born 26 May 1765. (It is certain that this is her birth date because her sister, Charlotte, was a witness at her wedding, making her family identifiable. Charlotte was married in the same parish, as was Henrietta and Charlotte’s sister, Hannah.)

(3) Richard and Henrietta Hall named one of their sons “Henry Newgent Hall”. Henrietta Johnson had a grandfather named “Henry Nugent.” This was before the main Irish immigration to London, so Nugent was still a relatively uncommon surname there at this time. There were probably fewer than ten Henry Nugents living in London in the entire 18th century, of whom one was Henrietta Johnson’s grandfather, one her uncle, and one (possibly) her cousin.

(4) Henrietta Johnson’s father was named Benjamin, which was the name Richard and Henrietta Hall gave to their second son.

Spouse: John Stuttard (1792 - 1873). Married 26 March 1815, London, England (St Giles Cripplegate) .

The date and place of marriage are given in the marriage registration.
