Emma Stuttard

Emma Stuttard is said to have won a piano competition as a teenager. According to her granddaughter, Elizabeth Beatrice Adamson (Our Family History p. 73), “Grandpa Stuttard took our Grandma Emma Cooke to France with him to buy linen and to speak French for him. She spoke several languages as she was educated at boarding school in Bath, England, as was her mother.” She lived in Stockton, and in Napton-on-the-Hill, Warwickshire with her first husband. An old notice, probably dating from after the death of her first husband, advertises her intention to take in a number of “young ladies” from the neighbourhood to educate with her children, teaching them English, arithmetic, music, drawing, and French. She emigrated to Canada with her second husband, who was 18 years younger than her, in about 1875. She lived in Toronto for about 23 years, until her death in 1898.
