John Stuttard

The parish registers of Whalley show that, John’s father, James Stuttard was an ostler, and later a weaver, residing in Wiswell, Lancashire. James seems to have died in 1796, and John’s mother Isabel remarried in 1802. The circumstances behind John’s move to London are unknown. He was married there in 1815, and already, starting in 1816, he is described as a warehouseman in the parish registers recording the baptisms of his children. This description is consistent in the records until the 1840s. After that, he is usually described as an agent. The business involved wholesale linen. For the first 15 years after his marriage, John and his family seemed to have lived at several different addresses in the City and in Hackney. In 1829, they settled in Watling Street, in the parish of Allhallows Bread Street (just east of St Paul’s), where they remained for more than a decade. John’s mother-in-law, Henrietta Hall (née Johnson), was living around the corner on Bread Street, and was was buried at Allhallows Bread Street in 1834. By 1843, John and his family had moved to Islington, where they remained into the early 1860s. John Stuttard and his wife lived in their later years with their daughter, Emma, in Napton-on-the-Hill, Warwickshire. Possibly they moved there after the death of Emma’s first husband in 1865, to help Emma with her children. Emma remarried in 1870. In 1871, she was living with her children and second husband in Leamington Spa, but John Stuttard was still in Napton, a lodger. He was buried there in 1873. (His wife had been buried there in 1867.)

Photographs survive of John Stuttard and wife, Henrietta Hall. It is possible that John’s middle name was “Ambrose”. Grandchildren of John’s daughter, Emma, referred to him as “John Ambrose Stuttard”. The middle name has not yet turned up in contemporary records. Emma had a son named “John Ambrose Cooke.” However, John Stuttard’s wife (and Emma’s mother) had a brother named “Benjamin Ambrose Hall”, which makes one suspect the middle name came from that side of the family.
