Commentary

The parents of James Stuttard have been identified based on these considerations:

(1) James Stuttard had a daughter baptized in November 1795 and his widow remarried in July 1802, so James must have died sometime between 1795 and 1802.

(2) The 1796 burial is the only plausible candidate that has shown up.

(3) The 1796 burial gives an age at death of 28, which is reasonable for a man married in 1790.

(4) The only baptism of a James Stuttard about 28 years previously is the Colne baptism.

(5) Corroborating evidence for the baptism is that the father’s name, Richard, is also the name given to James’s first legitimate son.
