Richard Stuttard

Richard Stuttard was a weaver at the time of his first marriage. He is known to have lived at Barley (1767) in the parish of Newchurch-in-Pendle, and his wife’s home of Watermeetings (1768), and the Pasture (1771), in the parish of Colne. His burial, with his wife, at the Wheatley Lane Inghamite Chapel suggests that he shared his parents’ and siblings’ religious commitment to the Inghamites.

Commentary

It is possible to identify Richard’s parents as Richard Stuttard and Elizabeth Driver for these reasons:

(1) Richard was married in the home parish, Newchurch-in-Pendle, of Richard Stuttard and Elizabeth Driver. There were two other Richard Stuttards baptized in nearby parishes in the time period, but both of those Richards died young.

(2) Richard’s wife Alice was buried in the Wheatley Lane Inghamite Cemetery in 1775. The early Stuttard burials in that cemetery were all members of Richard Stuttard (senior) and Elizabeth Driver’s family --Richard Stuttard (senior), Elizabeth Driver, and at least seven of their eight children were buried there, in addition to some of Richard (senior)’s grandchildren, daughters-in-law, and a probable sister-in-law (the most distant Inghamite relation before 1800). The Inghamites were an early branch of Methodism.

(3) Two Richard Stuttards were married at Newchurch-in-Pendle in the time period, but point (2) enables us to identify the parents of the one who married Alice Hargreaves.
