Commentary
Elizabeth’s parentage
Elizabeth was married at Ashurst, Sussex, in 1634. She had children baptized at Ashurst and later at Thakeham between 1635 and 1655. The dates suggest Elizabeth was born between about 1605 and 1620. Only one baptism appears in indexes in the period for an Elizabeth that did not die young: in 1616 in Warminghurst, father Henry Bridger. Elizabeth was Henry’s eldest daughter. He had a child baptized in Shipley in 1619/20, and then nine children baptized in Ashurst.
The 1634 Visitation of Sussex (p. 156) shows Henry and Elizabeth. It gives Henry’s wife as “Jane eldest d. of John Ravenscrofte of Horsham”. The informant seems to have been Henry Bridger.
In his 1657 will, Henry Bridger of Ashurst did not mention his daughters, but he named his brother-in-law Hall Ravenscroft.
In the 1615 inquisition post mortem of Henry’s father, Richard Bridger, a marriage settlement is mentioned between Henry Bridger, son and heir, and Jane, daughter of John Ravenscroft of Horhsam.
Elizabeth Bine was a witness to the 1669 nuncupative will of Henry Bridger’s daughter Mary Gratwicke, widow. In the will, Mary named several of her siblings, including her “Sister Bine”, and her niece, Jane Bine.
Taken together, the evidence is clear that Elizabeth’s parents were Henry Bridger and Jane Ravenscroft.
