William’s will:


In The name of God Amen I William Herbert of Lighthorne in the County of Warwick yeoman being weake in body but of good and perfect mind and memory (God be therefore praised) Doe make and ordaine this my last will and testament in manner and forme following Inprimis I bequeath my soule into the hands of Almighty God that gave it hopeing to be saved by the onely meretts of my Saviur and redeemer Jesus Christ And my body to be decently buried in the Churchyard of Lighthorne aforesaid And as for my Temporal Estate which it hath pleased God to lend me I dispose of as followeth I doe give unto my eldest sonne John Harbert the moiety or one halfe of my house home stall and land which is now -- my possession in Lighthorne aforesaid willing and earnestly desiring that he dwell in the same dureing the naturall life of my wife And use the said liveing together with her and be assistant to his mother in the management of the same And the better to inable him to use his moiety of the said Liveing I give and bequeath unto him halfe my Teame att my decease And the other att my wifes decease And all my Plowes Carts Geares horse harnes harrowes and all my other implements of husbandry And halfe my Cowes which goe now upon my Com[m]ons in Lighthorne aforesaid And halfe my sheepe which goe upon my Comons in Lighthorne Field aforesaid And halfe my Cropp now growing upon my said liveing And halfe my Corne that which now is in the barne and house and halfe the provision of Malt and Bacon Butter Cheese And I further give unto him one table and frame which stands in the hall of my said dwelling house one Joyned Bedd one furnace one malt mill unto my sonne Richard Harbert for whom I have already Provided I give the sum[m]e of Tenn shillings unto my sonne Thomas Herbert I give the sum[m]e of one hundred pounds to be paid my my Executor hereafter named within one yeare mext after my decease I alsoe give unto him one Joyned bedd And all furniture of Bedding for the same which is in the Drinke Chamber not yet sett upp one Presse standing in the neather Chamber one little Chare Table standing in the Drinke Chamber one Coffer and all which is in it standing in the nether Chamber one Brasse Pott one Kettle Three Pewter Dishes one Candlesticke and one salt one spitt Andirons and dripping pann unto my sonne Henry I give the sum[m]e of Tenn shillings to be paid within one yeare after my decease I give unto my daughter Margarett the full and just sum[m]e of one hundred Pounds to be paid by my Executor hereafter named within one yeare next after my decease And one Joyned Bedd with all furniture to the same belonging standing in the Nether Chamber one Coffer and all which is in it standing over the hall Three Pewter dishes one Candlestick and a salt and one little Brasse Pann unto my sonne William Herbert I give one shilling And to every one of his Children Two shillings and Six pence a peece unto my sonne in law John Masons Children I give two shillings six pence a peece And unto my son in Law William Smiths Children I give Two shillings six pence a peece I alsoe give unto these Poore people hereafter named Six pence a peece (viz) Richard King Elner King Frances Lea Fances Eyers and Sarah Miller unto my deare and loveing wife Mary I give all the rest of my goods Cattell and Chattells my debts paid my Legacies performed and funerall expences discharged Whom I make Executor of this my last will and Testament I doe nominate and appoint my loveing frendes WIlliam Smith and John Mason overseers of this my last will and Testament And desire them to see it performed accordingly To whom for their paines I give one shilling a peece In witnesse whereof I have hereto sett my hand and seale the Twentieth day of August In the yeare of our Lord One Thousand Six Hundred Sixty and Five.
