Relationships

Father: Maelgwn Hen ap yr Arglwydd Rhys (died about 1231).

This relationship is shown by Bartrum (EVWG Rhys ap Tewdwr 4), and given by Pryce (Acts Table 3), and by Smith (ODNB). It is recorded in Brut y Tywysogion s.a. 1231 and in Annales Cambriæ s.a. 1236. Bridgeman (p. 134) cites a charter which records the relationship.

(supposed) Mother: Gwenllian ferch Madog ap Maredudd.

This relationship is shown by Bartrum (EVWG Rhys ap Tewdwr 4). She was Maelgwn Hên’s step-mother. Bartrum doesn’t explicitly make her the mother of Maelgwn Fychan.

Spouse: Angharad ferch Llywelyn Fawr ab Iorwerth.

This relationship is shown by Bartrum (EVWG Rhys ap Tewdwr 4, Gruffudd ap Cynan 4). The sources for Angharad are mostly later genealogies, but a letter patent dated by Pryce (p. 202) to 1260 refers to an Angharard daughter of Llywelyn. Pryce states that this was "almost certainly the daughter of Llywleyn ap Iorwerth who married Maelgwn Fychan".
