Relationships

Father: Gulbert, advocate of St. Valéry-en-Caux.

Cawley gives Richard’s father as Bernard, but this seems to be based on a misreading of Orderic Vitalis (3:41-42): “Gulbertus, cognomento Advocatus de Sancto Gualerico, filiam Ricardi ducis uxorem duxit, ex qua Bernardum patrem Gualterii de Sancto-Gualerico et Ricardum de Huglevilla genuit. Ricardus autem duci Normanniæ, avunculo videlicet suo, diu militavit, cujus dono nobilem Adam, Herluini senis de Huglevilla relictam, cum toto patrimonio ejus accepit.” Bernard and Richard are both given as sons of Gulbert and the daughter of duke Richard.

Mother: unclear.

It seems that she was a daughter of Richard, the duke of Normandy, but sources differ as to which Richard -- I, II, or III. (III would seem to be chronologically impossible.) Her name was possibly Papia, but this, too, is not entirely clear.

Spouse: Ada, widow of Herluin de Heugleville

This relationship is given by Cawley.

Children:

(Complete source citations for facts about the children on this page are currently outside of the scope of this project. Most information below comes from Cawley.)

Ada de Heugleville married Geoffroi de Neufmarché.
