Commentary

There were three Janes baptized in Whitehaven in the time period. Jane's mention of her brother Samuel in her will makes her parentage clear, as Samuel also appears in the 1841 and 1851 censuses, with his age and place of birth confirming his identity.

Jane's last child, Jane, seems to have been born suspiciously late. The Jane Bullen named as a grandchild in Jane Lancaster's will was a daughter of Richard Bale and Elizabeth Hinde, and was born in 1809, according to censuses. No baptism for her has turned up, although baptism records for Richard and Elizabeth's other children exist. Perhaps Jane Lancaster's granddaughter was baptized as her daughter, although the motive for this is unclear, since Jane Hinde was born nine months after the marriage of Richard Bale and Elizabeth Hinde. Jane is not mentioned in Isaac’s will.
