Hugh (I) de Mortimer

Events

Date of Birth: unknown.

Place of Birth: unknown.

Date of Death: 1148-1150.

This date range is given by Mason (ODNB) and by the Complete Peerage (9:269). Ian Mortimer argues that Hugh (II) below is the same person as Hugh (I) and actually died in 1185.

Relationships

Father: Ralph (I) de Mortimer.

This relationship is given by Mason (ODNB), by Keats-Rohan (p. 601), and by the Complete Peerage (9:268).

Mother: uncertain.

It is not clear whether Ralph’s first wife, Millicent, or his second wife, Mabel, was the mother of Hugh.

Spouse: unknown.

Children:

(Mason in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography notes that the foundation narratives of Wigmore Abbey have erroneously made Hugh (II) the son of Ralph (I). Ian Mortimer argues that this is not an error, and that the two Hughs were the same person.).

Roger de Mortimer.

Hugh (II) de Mortimer married Matilda, daughter of William le Meschin of Egremont.
