Alan Henman attended Oxford, gaining a B.A. in 1687. He worked as a medical doctor. In 1704, 1705, and 1706, he signed himself as “Alan Henman alias Taylor” [medic] on documents related to his work. He appears to have been living in Croydon, Surrey, at the time. The “alias Taylor” was probably added to his name as a condition for receiving an inheritance, but confirmation of this has not been tracked down yet. Court records in Henry Nugent v. William Hancock and Elizabeth his wife show that Alan was the father of a son out of wedlock with Frances Nugent (neé Byne) while her husband was on the Continent. Alan’s presumably legitimate son, Alan, was apprenticed to a painter in 1713, at which point Alan (senior) was already dead. The name of his wife is unknown.
Events
Date of Birth: about 1665, or about perhaps about 1667.
He must, of course, have been born before his baptism. However, Oxford records cited by Foster (2:693) state that he matriculated at Trinity College 21 March 1683/4 at the age of 16, which would imply a birth date of about 1667. The 1687 will of Alan's aunt, Elizabeth Henman, implies that he was under 21 at that time.
Date of Baptism: 13 April 1665.
Place of Baptism: Lenham, Kent.
The baptism is given in two indexes of the Lenham parish registers and in the bishop's transcripts. It may be that this Alan died, and a later son was also baptized Alan, given the evidence for the birth date mentioned above.
Date of Burial: 26 February 1711/12.
Place of Burial: Croydon, Surrey (St John's).
The burial is given in the parish register.

Commentary
Alan’s parentage
Alan is described as a master of arts on his medical licence. An Alan Henman matriculated at Trinity College, Oxford 21 March 1683/4, aged 16, and received his B.A. in 1687. He is described by Foster as a son of William Henman, gentleman of Lavenham, Kent.
The bishop’s transcripts to the Lenham parish registers (I haven’t seen the parish registers themselves) have three separate bills of register containing Alan’s baptism. They all give the date as 13 April. Two give the year as 1665 and one as 1665/6. All three give Alan’s father as William. Two give his mother as Jane and one as Elizabeth.
The 1687 will of Elizabeth Henman of Syndane in the parish of Lenham, spinster, names her “sister” Jane, the widow of her brother William Henman. It also leaves a bequest to the two sons of William, William and Allen Henman, to be paid when they come to the age of 21.
I explain on Jane’s page why I think Jane was a sister of Joseph Peirce, and thus a daughter of Gabriel Peirce and Katherine Joslin.
