Tuppen Scrase

Tuppen matriculated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford, in 1598, and was a student at the Middle Temple in 1601. The Victoria County History of Sussex records that he had the manor of Combe, in Hamsey, the manor of Blatchington, Hove Villa, and property in Piddingworth (VCH 7, pp. 85, 106, 243, 266). He was issued letters of marque and was involved in privateering (legalized piracy) in the late 1620s and early 1630s, looking after the financial side while his brother William captained. (See The Scrase Family and Piracy for documentation). The ships of which he was owner or part-owner were “Dolphin” (120 tons) and “Fortune” (80 tons). He is described as of Preston, Sussex, in his burial record.
