Sergio I, duke of Naples

Sergio became duke in 840 through the collective choice of the local aristocracy, although not through a formal election. A "duke" was no longer purely a military official within the Byzantine hierarchy, but a regional leader with his own interests. (Granier).

Place of Death: unknown.

The date is given by Schipa (1892, p. 643). Granier gives before the end of August 864.

This relationship is given by Skinner (p. 48), by Schipa (1892, p. 610), and by Granier.

Mother: Eupraxia.

This relationship is given by Skinner (p. 48), by Schipa (1892, p. 610), and by Granier. Marinus and Eupraxia were nobiles. Granier mentions a hypothesis that Eupraxia's mother was a daughter of an earlier duke of Naples, Stefano II, based on the names Gregorio, Cesarius, and Stefano being given to Sergio's sons.


Spouse: Drusa.
