This relationship is given in the Buckinghamshire VCH (4:sub Padbury) and by the Sussex VCH (9:212).

(presumed) Mother: Alice.

Saul (p. 2) gives Alice as Simon’s wife. Alice is mentioned in documents from a few decades later (CIPM vol. 11, Edward III, no. 59 , p. 43; CIPM vol. 12, Edward III, no. 335, p. 328)


Spouse: Pauline.

Simon, his brother, aged 35, is his heir in Sussex.

Somerset. Chizelberge, a moiety of the manor held of the inheritance of Margery his wife of the king in chief by barony, Ralph de la Haye holding the other moiety by reason of his wife.

Sussex. Extent (undated). Echingham and Oedymere manors (extents given) held of the barony of Hastynges of Sir Edward the king’s son by service of 7 knights’ fees, and 4l. 4s. one year and 63s. the second year for guard.

Hastinges, land held of the abbot of Fescamp by 10s. yearly.

Oedymere, part of the garden held of the son of Robert de Brede by 17d. yearly.

2a. held of Osbert de Horemere by 12d. yearly; and land held of Richard des Ores by 1lb. pepper.

Oedymere, 5½a. and 1 rood acquired of the fee of the said abbot, held of certain of the abbot’s tenants by 1½d. yearly.

5a. acquired of the fee of Echingham; certain land held by 1lb. pepper; and 60a. held of Herbert Burgers by 1lb. pepper.

Payforere quer' et Sim. de Echingham deforc':— De quinque marcatis viginti et una denar' et una quadrantata redditus et quinquaginta acris marisci in Odimere; unde placitum convencionis sum' fuit inter eos:—Simo recognovit &c., et preterea concessit quod viginti quatuor solid' et tres denar' redditus scil' quicquid Marg. que fuit uxor Willi. de Echingham tenuit in dotem de hereditate Sim. in marisco de Pudele et que ad Sim. post decessum Marg. debuerunt reverti post decessum Marg. remaneant Willo. et hbs. suis tenenda simul cum predictis tenementis de Sim. reddendo quadraginta den' ad duos terminos scil' med' ad Nativ' Sci. Johis. Bapte. et alteram med' ad festum Sci. Michis. pro omni servicio:—Pro hoc fine Wills. dedit Sim. unum sparvarium sorum. More (p. 299) states that Simon was summoned as a knight in the Rape of Hastings to defend the coast in 1296, and that he is mentioned as sometime holding seven knight’s fees.
