William (III) de Briouze

Lord of Briouze, Bramber, Brecon, Over Gwent, etc.

William was a powerful marcher lord under Richard I and King John. His downfall was caused by his knowledge of the circumstances surrounding King John’s murder of Arthur of Brittany. King John confiscated William’s lands, and imprisoned and deliberately starved to death William’s wife, Matilda, and his eldest son, William. (Turner, ODNB)
