Rebuke for irregular marriage in the parish register, Peebles, 17 January 1819

James Fotheringham candlemaker in Peebles and Elizabeth Goodfellow from the parish of Minto Compeared before the Kirk Session and declared that they were married at Edinburgh on the 23rd of May 1818 by the Rev’d Crawford, the parties were rebuked for irregularity and their marriage was ordered to be recorded.

Commentary

Elizabeth’s Edinburgh marriage registration gives her father as “ the late Wm Goodfellow Plaisterer Edr” [Edinburgh]. This may be true, but the subsequent rebuke in Peebles raises some suspicions about the credibility of the information.
