Commentary
Alice’s parentage
In his 1566 will, Peter Godfrey of Lydd, Kent, named “Willyam Plum[m]er, Johane Plum[m]er, Alyce Plummer, and Agnes Plummer, the children of Alyce Plumer my daughter” and “Thomas Plummer theyr father”.
The Lydd parish register records the baptism in 1543 of “Alys the Daugher of Peter Godrey”.
A monumental inscription in the parish church of Lydd records that Peter’s wife was named Jone.
Peter’s eldest child was baptized in 1542. The Old Romney register records the marriage in 1540 of “Peter Godfrey & Joane Epps”.
The 1619 visitation of Kent (p. 132) gives Peter’s wife as “Joanna filia Joh’is Epes”.
Taken together, the evidence shows that Alice’s parents were Peter Godfrey and Joan Eppes.
These relationships are what Howard gives in his notes to the visitation.
