The date is given in the 1901 census of Canada. The 1911 census gives “Aug. 1850”. The 1851 census of Scotland, taken on 30 March 1851, gives an age of 6 months, and gives the place of birth as Edinburgh. The marriage record implies a date of birth of about 1848, which was presumably an intentional fib since Jeannetta appears to have been 14 years old and seven months pregnant at the time of her marriage.

Place of Death: Muskoka, Ontario, Canada.

The death registration gives the 13 December date. Her gravestone gives 15 December.

Place of Burial: Uffington, Muskoka (Uffington United Cemetery).

Commentary

The name Jeannetta is given on her gravestone. Other documents usually give “Jane”.

Jane’s father is said on her marriage and death registrations to be William James Greaves. Here are some reasons to suppose that this was not in fact the case:

(1) Jane’s mother Agnes did not marry William Greaves until July 1852, about two years after Jane’s birth.

(2) In the 1851 census, Jane and her mother, Agnes, were living with Agnes’s father, James Fothringham. Jane is recorded as “Jane Stuart”, born in Edinburgh, a candle maker’s daughter. Agnes is recorded as “Agnes Fotheringham”, and is unmarried.

There are records of a marriage between a William Stewart and an Agnes Fotheringham in Alva, Stirling, (1 June 1838) and Linlithgow, West Lothian, (3 June 1838). William was of Alva and Agnes was of Linlithgow. I haven’t managed to trace that family in the census or parish registers.
