Commentary
Elizabeth’s parentage
In the entry for her 1592 marriage in the Burton Dassett register, Elizabeth is described as “Elizabethe Wagstaffe daughter to John Wagstaff”. The register also records the baptism in 1569 of “Elizabeth the daughter of John Wagstaffe yeom[an] & Mary his wife”.
In his 1607 will, John Wagstaff names his son-in-law John Lidbrooke. In his 1638 will, William Wagstafffe of Farmborough mentions his brother-in-law John Lidbrooke and his sister, John’s wife. He also mentions John’s son James Lidbrooke.
In his multi-volume work Literary Anecdotes of the Eighteenth Century (4:186), John Nichols cites Thomas Wagstaff that John Wagstaff’s wife Mary was a daughter of Thomas Makepeace of Northend. Thomas Wagstaff was basing this on “old deeds”.
