Commentary

I have identified these John Spicers in records related to Southam in the middle or late 1500s:

The 1559 will of Robert Spicer names as his executor his son John Spicer. The will also names many other Spicers, including three John Spicers, without giving relationships for any of them. It is not clear whether the Johns are identical with each other or with the John who is the executor of the will. The first bequest in the will is to a John Spicer who has a son Robert. The second bequest is to a Christian Spicer.

The 1586/7 will of John Spicer names his son Robert and wife Christian. It also names his overseers, Thomas and John Spicer. John, Christian, and Robert, are perhaps the first three people named in the 1559 will of Robert Spicer above. Christian's will names other children probably mentioned in the 1559 will. Other known dates are consistent with this John being the son of the above Robert.

The 1592 will of William Spicer names his brothers Robert Spicer and John Spicer.

The 1592/4 will of Henry Spicer makes his cousins Robert Spicer and John Spicer his overseers. The 1592 will of Henry Spicer junior makes his cousin John Spicer his overseer.

The parish registers record the baptism of a John Spicer in 1567, parents Thomas Spicer and Agnes. This John had a brother Robert baptized in 1571 and probably a half-brother William baptized in 1555. The dates are in accord with the 1590s wills (The William of the 1592 will was married in 1573.) Therefore, it seems likely that the John Spicer baptized in 1567 is identical with the John Spicer named in the 1590s wills. Since there is no other John Spicer of the right age in the parish registers in the 1590s, it also seems likely that this is the John Spicer of this page.
