Thomas Squier's will

One of the overseers of the 1611 will of Thomas Squier alias Fisher of Leamington Hastings was his friend John Cooke. Witnesses included John Cooke, Nicholas Cooke, and John Cooke junior. The elder John Cooke made a mark (a triangle), and the younger John Cooke signed his name.

Commentary

I give John Cooke’s father as John based on these pieces of evidence:

  1. The elder John was of Leamington Hastings.

  2. The elder John mentions his son John in his 1573 will.

  3. The names given in the two families overlap (Nicholas, Emme).

John’s son John mentions his brother Robert and his two unnamed sisters (presumably Jane and Millicent) in his 1656 will.
