Matrimonial Differences
The Borough Magistrates (Ald. Wm. Nicholson and Mr. Wm. Brimelow) investigated this morning a charge of persistent cruelty brought by Harriet Molineux, lodging at 43, Cope Bank, against her husband, Alfred Edwin Molineux, a master painter, of 31, Cope Bank. Mr Fielding represented the complainant, and Mr. J.H. Hall, who was for the defence, applied to have the case tried in camera. Mr. Fielding opposed the application, and said he had a letter from defendant offering to pay £1 per week. The Magistrates decided to go on with the case in Court. It appeared that the parties had been married five years, and had lived in Southport for about two years. Complainant alleged that during the last eight weeks her husband had not given her sufficient to keep the house on, and for two weeks she had had nothing from him. She had had to borrow from neighbours. She could give no reason why he did not give her enough money, because she knew he had it to get drunk with. He had ill-used her and struck her -- the first time about a month ago. She had left him five times before, and had been away six months at once, during which time she had had nothing from him. She was afraid of him when in drink. -- Cross-examined by Mr. Hall, complainant admitted having thrown a glass at her husband because of an allegation he made against a relation. Mr. Hall asked the Magistrates whether they were satisfied that defendant had been guilty of persistent cruelty, and said his client wished complainant to return home again. -- A separation order was made, defendant to contribute £1 per week, the wife to have the custody of the two children.

Commentary
Harriet’s parentage:
Harriet’s daughter Doris, who grew up with Harriet and Harriet’s mother Adelaide, told me that Harriet’s parents were Capt. Samuel Hinde and Adelaide Winstanley.
Harriet appears with her mother, Adelaide Hinde in several censuses. She appears with her brothers and sisters in some of these censuses, and baptism records for these children, matching the ages and places of birth in the census, confirm that their parents were Samuel and Adelaide Hinde.
On Harriet’s birth certificate, her parents are listed as Samuel Hinde, master mariner, and Adelaide Winstanley. The informant was Adelaide. Samuel and Adelaide are recorded as Harriet’s parents in her baptism entry.
Adelaide Hinde names her deceased daughter Harriet Molineux in her will.
Adelaide’s marriage record confirms that her maiden name was Winstanley. This was also the middle name Harriet gave to her daughter Doris.
There is supporting DNA evidence that Harriet was the daughter of Samuel Hinde and Adelaide Winstanley. I am a paper-trail descendant of Harriet, and I share DNA with five paper-trail descendants of Harriet’s sister (and Samuel and Adelaide’s daughter) Mary Adelaide.
Thus multiple independent pieces of direct and indirect evidence provide sufficient evidence for Harriet’s parentage.
