Relationships

Father: Llywelyn Fawr ab Iorwerth Drwyndwn ab Owain Gwynedd (died 1240).

This relationship is shown by Bartrum (EVWG Gruffudd ap Cynan 4). Angharad seems to be mentioned in a 1260 letter patent of Rhys Fychan ap Rhys ap Maelgwn Fychan (Pryce no. 66).

Mother: uncertain.

Bartrum shows her mother as Joan, the illegitimate daughter of King John of England, citing Peniarth 131 (a manuscript written about 1480 by Gutun Owain), Peniarth 129 (a manuscript written about 1500 by Ieuan Brechfa), Peniarth 137 (a manuscript written about 1510 by “Syr” Thomas ap Ieuan ap Deiews; Peniarth 135 (a manuscript written by Gruffudd Hiraethog, who died in 1564); The Golden Grove Book; and Peniarth 287 (a manuscript by Robert Vaughan of Hengwrt, who died in 1667). "Plant yr Arglwydd Rhys" section 3d gives Joan as the mother: "Gwraic Maelgwn ifank oedd Angharad verch Llywelyn ap Ie[r]werth drwyndwnn o Sioned verch Iauan vrenin Lloegr i mam." Bartrum notes that the versions of "Plant yr Argwydd Rhys" that we have now were copied starting in about 1500, and the existing form of the genealogy was compiled not earlier than the mid-1300s. Lewys Dwnn (1:329), in contrast, gives Angharad's mother as Llywelyn’s mistress Tangwystl.

Spouse: Maelgwn Fychan ap Maelgwn Hên ap Rhys

This relationship is shown by Bartrum (EVWG Trahaearn ap Caradog).
