Earlier, there was a Hamlet le Boteler, who had a son Richard, who had a son Adam who was known in 1203 as Adam de Hoghton. The connection between Sir Adam and these earlier de Hoghtons is not clear. The Lancashire VCH (6:sub Hoghton) suggests that probably the earlier Adam had two sons, Richard, and Adam. Richard was succeeeded by his brother, Adam, who was probably succeeded by his son, also named Adam. The Sir Adam of this page was probably the son or grandson of this last-named Adam.

This relationship is given by the Lancashire VCH (6:sub Hoghton fn 22).
