Agreement, dated 20 October 1485

John Hulton of Farneworth, esq. and Roger Hulton the younger of Hulton Parke -- Adam, son and heir of R.H. to marry Alice daughter of J.H. within 10 years. Roger to assure lands value 10 marks within 3 months of the death of Roger his father. J.H. to pay to R.H. 140 marks and to Katerine wife of R.H. 10 marks. Witn. Thomas Tyldesley of Wordley, esq. Thomas Hourden of Wolston, gent, Henry Gernett, Sir James Smethley, priest, John Bradshaw of Bolton, Thomas Tyldesley of the Pele, Robert Bolton of Lityll Bolton, gents.


Information from John's will:

He asks to be buried in the parish church at Deyne.

He leaves a cow and a calf to his godson (filiolus) John Chaydocke.

He leaves 40 shillings to his relative (cognatus) James Smetheley.

He leaves to his wife Johan the third part of all his lands, bearing the sum of 33 marks, 2 shillings, 8 pence, lying in Ru'worth, Heyton, Lostocke, Snythill in Halghton and Okynbothu' in Breghtmeyt.

He leaves to his daughters Elsabeth and Alic 20 li of his livelihood lying in Manchester, Denton, Gorton, Okynshawe (Openshawe) and Yrlame, and also part in Farnworth, to their marriages. He also leaves them money and a number of household items.

John's brother Christopher is his feoffee.

John's "brother" Thomas Hawarden is to be paid 20 pounds for the marriage of John's daughter Elizabeth.

Roger Hulton is to be paid 20 pounds for the marriage of John's daughter Alice to Roger's son and heir Adam Hulton.

John mentions that his other brothers and sisters are living in Hopehey and other places.

He names his brother Richard (land worth 10 pounds), his brothers James and Robert (land in Denton), and his "brother" John Chaidocke.

He makes his uncle Thurstan Tyldesley and his brother Christopher Hulton his executors.

He makes overseers Robert Workesley and Thomas Tyldesley of Wordeley.

Witnesses: Thomas Hawarden, Ranulph Sonke, Thomas Tyldesley of Pele, John Bradshawe, Sir Gil. Lever the vicar of Bolton, Dame Yssabell Radcliff and Richard her son, Jane Barton, Sir James Smetheley, Sir James Holden, and others.

He also mentions his two godsons Hugh son of Chetam and Robyn Haliwall.
