Cawley states that the relationship is deduced from a reference in the Gesta Regis Henrici Secundi Benedicti Abbatis (Stubbs, 1:361) which states that Margaret was a sister of William, the king of Scotland. The Chronicle of Melrose (Stephenson p. 77) states: “Et hoc anno [1161] Malcolmus rex dedit sororem suam Margaretam Conano duci Britannie.”
