The estimated date is given by Cawley, citing De Dominabus et Puellis que sunt de Maritagio Regis (Grimaldi p. 33): “Margareta Comitissa est de donatione Domini Regis, et est xl annorum, et Comes Britannie habet filiam suam, et ipsa habet j filium de Humfrido de Buun, qui est infra etatem.” The record is from 1185.

This relationship is given by White (ODNB) and by Keats-Rohan (p. 246). Cawley states that the relationship is deduced from a reference in the Gesta Regis Henrici Secundi Benedicti Abbatis (Stubbs, 1:361) which states that Margaret was a sister of William, the king of Scotland. The Chronicle of Melrose (Stephenson p. 77) states: “Et hoc anno [1161] Malcolmus rex dedit sororem suam Margaretam Conano duci Britannie.”
