Robert’s will:


In the name of God Amen: The Nineth day of December in the yeare of our Lord god One Thowsand six hundred Thirty and fower I: Robert: Ridler of Upper Lippiatt in the limitacon of Strowd in the p[ar]rish of Bilsey in the County of Glour Clothier being weake in bodie but of p[er]fect memorie doe make my last will and Testam.t in manner and forme followinge First I bequeath my soule into the hands of God and my body to the earth And as for my wordly estate I dispose of thereof in manner and forme following Imprimis I give unto William Ridler my father Tenn pounds yearly during his naturall life Issueinge and to be taken out of the Messuage and lands lying in Over Lippiatt called Mittlinge to be payed unto him quarterly by equall porcons which I have granted him already And Fiftie shillings in money to be payed unto him at or upon the fyve and twentyth day of March next ensuinge the day of my decease Provided alwaies and my will is that if my wife or my sonne Nathaniell shall and doe provide for my sayd father sufficient meate drinke apparrell and lodging to my sayd fathers content and lykeinge or that he doeth continue and abide with either of them That then such of them as doe mayntayne him as aforesaid shall have the sayd Tenn pounds per annum and the sayd Fifty shillings for his sayd mayntaynance Item I give and bequeath unto my wife Joane the aforesayd messuage called Mittlinge which I bought of John Sisam and alsoe all that meadowe or pasture ground adioyning to the same and p[ar]cell also of the premises and adioyning thereunto which I bought of William Pettite To have and to hould all and every the premises unto my sayd wife Joane for and during soe many yeares of my termes and estates therein as she shall keepe herselfe sole and unmarried after my decease The aforesayd guifte unto my father only excepted Item I give unto my sayd wife Joane my terme and estate in the messuage and Tenement with the appurtenances lyinge in Wishanger in the p[ar]ish of Miserden which I bought of Thomas Cull Item I give and bequeath unto my said wife Joane Fifty pounds of Currant money. Item I give and bequeath unto Robert my sonne all that my estate and Terme of yeares which I have in the Messuage or Tenement calle Mottlings lying in Overlypiate aforesaid which I bought and purchased of John Siseham aforesayd And allsoe all that my estate and Terme of yeares which I have in all that pasture ground p[ar]cell of the premises whcih I bought of Thomas Whithorne And allsoe all that my estate and Terme of yeares which I have in all that errable or pasture ground p[ar]cell allsoe of the premises which I bought of William Pettite To hould and enioye all and every the premises unto my sayd sonne Robert from and after the marriage or decease of his said mother for and during all and every the seuerall estates and termes of yeares which I have therein. The yearly Annuity of Tenn pounds given unto my sayd Father during his life and the gifts thereof unto my wife duringe her widowhood before menconed onely excepted Item I give and bequeath unto my sayd sonne Robert all that my p[ar]te of Calfeway Wood To have and to hould unto my sayd sonne Robert and unto his heires for ever Item I give and bequeath unto my sayd sonne Robert Two hundred and fifty pounds in Currant money Item I give and bequeath unto my sonne John the some of Two hundred pounds of like lawfull money Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Two hundred pounds of current money And my will and meaning is that the sayd severall somes afore menconed shall remayne in the hands of my Executor untill such tyme as my sayd sonnes Robert and John shall accomplish their seuerall and respective ages of one and Twenty yeares and my daughter Mary of eighteene yeares If my sayd Executors shall within one month after my decease give unto my Overseers such good and sufficient security as they or the greatest p[ar]te of them shall like of for the true payment of the sayd seuerall somes unto my sayd seuerall Children at the severall times aforemenconed And for the Improvement of the [...] thereof to and for the mayntenance educacon and advantage of my aforesaid Children And it is my Will That if any of my aforesayd Children shall dye before they accomplish their severall ages above specified That the persons soe bequeathed unto him or them that shall soe dye shalbe by even and equall porcons devided among the rest of my Children surviving Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Joane the somme of three hundred pounds of currant money to be payed unto her by my Executors in manner and forme followinge (vizt) One hundred pounds at the day of her marriage, And the other two hundred pounds to be payed unto her by my executors within six months after the day of her marriage Item I give unto Nathaniel my sonne my house and Mills lyinge in the p[ar]ish of Minchinhampton which I bought of Mr William Elkington And the two paddocks therunto adioyning which I bought of Thomas Knowles, And my dyehouse furnace Vates and other implem.ts therin. And all other my Tuckers sheares Presse And all other implementes in my say Mill belonginge to the trade of a Tucker and allsoe the grownds called the Linel which I hould of Mr Coxewell, And all these grounds which I bought of Mr Richard Gyde called Cole Close and upper broad crafte And allsoe all that wood or grove called the Church grove lying in the p[ar]ish of Bisley And all my estate or estates Terme or Termes Interest of in or to the premises To have and to hould all and euery the premises unto my sayd sonne Nathaniel for and during all the severall estates and Termes which I have therin Provided alwayes that my sayd sonne Nathaniell shall pay unto Joane my wife the somme of fifteene pounds yearelye one of the premises for soe longe a time as shee shall kepe her selfe sole and unmarried after my decease to be payed unto her at the Feaste of the Annunciation of St Mary the virgin, and St Michaell the Archangell by equall porcons. And If it shall happen the sayd some of fiftene pounds to be behinde and unpayed after any of the sayd Feasts then it shalbe lawfull for my sayd wife to enter into the premises and the same to releyve and enioye untill of the sayd rents or some of money and the Arrerages therof shee shalbe fuly satisfied and payed Item I give unto my sayd sonne Nathaniell all my Wood and tymber which I have in Lawrence lamb and the Terme of yeares which I have therein which I bought of Mr Henrie Winchcombe my sayd sonne Nathaniell paying One hundred and fifty pounds by fifty pounds a yeare unto Mr Winchcombe accordinge to my Covenant with him made Item I give unto my sayd sonne Nathaniell One hundred pounds of Currant money Item I give and bequeath unto my sonne John his heires and assignes for ever all that Tenemt with two leasowes with eleaven acres of errable land lying in Bisley feild which I lately purchased of One John Furner by waye of Morgage And if the sayd John Furner shall pay the money due upon the sayd Morgage at the time apointed or redeeme the same Then my will is that my said sonne John shall have the sayd money and the rent reserved upon the premises in the interim Item I give and bequeath unto Margaret Ridler my sister the som[m]e of Forty shillings per Annum for and duringe her naturall life yssuing and to be taken out of the Messuage and lands formerly of John Siseham lying in Overly Pyatt aforesayd comonly called Mottlings to be payed unto her quarterly after the decease of William Ridler my sayd father as by a former deed I have formerly graunted the same unto her Item I give unto the poore of the p[ar]ish of Stround forty shillings to be distributed by Mr John Sedgewicke at the day of my buriall And I ordayne and make the sayd Joane my wife and my sayd sonne Nathaniel my Executors of this my last will and Testament whom I doe require to p[er]forme according to my true intent And I doe make and ordayne John Clissall of Steanebridgestad, Robert Hiner of the same Thomas Tayloe of Bilsey Thomas Clissall of Overlipiatt and Richard Rogers of Bushridge my Overseers of this my last will and Testament All whom I doe entreate And it is my will that they be assistant to my Executors for the Improveing of my said Childrens porcons by purchasing of lands leases or Coppyhoulds And for their paines therein I give and bequeath unto them and each of them (as a token of my love) the severall somme of five shillings In witnes hereof and for further testimony of this my sayd last will and Testament I have hereunto sett my hand and seale this Ninth daye of December above written. the marke of Robert Ridler./ Memorand that before the ensealinge and publishing hereof It was declared by the sayd Robert Ridler as his menaning, That there should be a deducon made by his Executors of three score pounds out of the two hundred pounds before bequeathed to his sayd sonne John/ In Consideracon of the late Mortgage purchased from John Furner and now settled upon the sayd John. Sealed subscribed and published by the sayd Robert Ridler as his last will and Testament in the presence of John: Sedgwick, Robert Driver, signed Rici Gibbons, the marke of Thomas Gibbons, John: Clifford./ Memorand that whereas I have by my last will and Testament as above apeareth given and bequeathed unto my sonne Nathaniell Ridler all that my howse and Mill scituate and being in the p[ar]ish of Minchinhampton with the appurtenances together with severall closes and p[ar]cells of ground as before in this my will it may more fully appeare I doe here further publish and declare that is my will and meaning that my said sonne Nathaniell shall have and enioye the same soe longe as hee shall quietly p[er]mitt and suffer Joane my wife and her assignes after my decease during her widdowhood to take and reserve the rents and p[ro]fitts of those two messuages and Tenements called Frith howse, and Lowrel according to a certeyne deed by me sealed unto Robert Driver for that purpose bearinge date this twentieth day of december in the 10th yeare of the Raigne of our soueraigne Lord King Charles that now is over England &c. And if that my said sonne Nathaniell shall contrary to my intent and meaning interrupt my said wife in the receiving of the said proffitts then my will and meaning is that my said wife shall during her widdowhood have and enioye the Messuage Mills and other lands before bequeathed to my said sonne as aforesaid In witnes wher of I have hereunto sett my hand this twentieth day of decemb.
