Imprimis I bequeath my soul to God, and my body to be buried in the church of St. Nicholas, Wickham. I bequeath for three priests to say masses for my soul during one whole year, £20; for the gathering (convocacio) of my friends on the day of my burial £20; for a window on the south side of the said church, 100s.; for a tomb (una tumba) where I am buried in the said church, 10 marks ; to'be distributed amongst the poor on the day of my burial, 100s. ; for a trental for my soul, to be celebrated in divers places, 75s. ; to Richard Stake, my servant, 45s. ; to John Cook, my house-steward (dispensator), 26s. 8d.; to Henry, my chaplain, 20s.; to John Frie, my servant, 40s. ; to Michael King, 13s. 4d.; to William 'atte Kychene, my cook, 20s.; to Richard Prat, 10s. ; to John Bakere, 10s. ; to Thomas James, Henry atte Court, and John Scrifkyng, each 40s. ; to Alice Lommour, 40s. ; to her children, 7 marks ; to John Wythynge, 20$. ; to John Jon, 10os. ; to William Blaunforde, 40s. ; to Edward Mortone, canon of Southwick, 40s. ; to be distributed amongst my poor bond-tenants (nativos) at Wickham and Widley, 4os. ; and to John Couk, my secretary (clericus), 100s. Residue to be disposed of by executors for the good of my soul at their discretion. Also to repair fabric of Widley church, 40s. ; and to Thomas Glamorgan, 20s. Executors, his sister Sibil,” John Uvedale, John Newe, and John Couke, his secretary.

Dated at Bedhampton, 1 November, 1381, and proved on the 23rd of same month before the bishop at Southwark.

He gave the under-mentioned manors of Mapulderham Gurney and Stoklile to George Felbrugge, knight, Roger Marchall, John Lynde and John Cook of Wykham, who gave them to the said Robert and Amice his wife, who is still living, for life, rendering a rose at the Nativity of St John the Baptist.

Parties: William Heryng' and John Cheke, querents, and Walter Haket and Julian, his wife, deforciants.

Property: 5 messuages and 15 acres of land in Farham and Hameldon'.

Plea of covenant.

Agreement: Walter and Julian have acknowledged the tenements to be the right of William, as those which William and John have of their gift.

For this: William and John have granted to Walter and Julian the tenements and have rendered them to them in the court, to hold to Walter and Julian, of the chief lords for the lives of Walter and Julian. And after the decease of Walter and Julian 1 messuage and 3 acres of land shall remain to the right heirs of Walter, to hold of the chief lords for ever. And 4 messuages and 12 acres of land shall remain to Henry Emery, to hold of the chief lords for the life of Henry. And after the decease of Henry the same tenements shall remain to John Cook of Wykeham, to hold of the chief lords for the life of John. And after the decease of John Cook' the same tenements shall remain to Thomas Haket', to hold of the chief lords for the life of Thomas. And after the decease of Thomas, the same tenements shall remain to the right heirs of Julian, to hold of the chief lords for ever.

1413 May 13. Westminster

To the warden of the Flete prison, and to his representative. Order to set free John Cooke of the Isle of Wight, who was committed to that prison for a trespass against William Ryngebourne; as Thomas Lyle esquire and Hugh Branktre, both of the county of Suthampton, and Simon Sye of Berkshire have made a recognisance in chancery to the plaintiff for 20l., upon condition that John Cooke against whom he recovered that sum before the justice of the Bench, shall before those justices prosecute a writ de audita querela which he has obtained in chancery, and shall prove that an alleged acquittance for the same by the plaintiff made is the plaintiff’s deed, sealed with his seal, and in case he shall fail in aught shall at the quinzaine of Easter next content the plaintiff of the 20l. in presence of the said justices.
