Thomas Bynde or Byne inherited or purchased the mansion house and estate of Rowdell, at Washington, Sussex, after the date of his marriage.

Events

Date of Birth: unknown.

Thomas seems to have been underage in 1498.

The dates are when his will was made and proved.

Thomas’s will and inquisition post mortem (Attree p. 45, no. 208) give her name as Joan. Renshaw infers that she was a Threele of Loxwood from the arms above the burial monument of Thomas’s grandson John Byne.

Commentary

There is some information about the preceding generations at Rowdell, but I am not quite sure how it fits together.

According to Renshaw (p. 14), an Edward Byne had the manor of Byne in West Grinstead. He married Isabella, and had two sons, his heir William, and Thomas, born in about 1485. William inherited, and Edward’s widow Isabella remarried Edward Cooke. William died in 1508, when his brother Thomas inherited. Thomas married Joan, and died 17 January 1519/20. Thomas had made Richard Shirley, John Goring, and Edward Lewkenor senior his trustees. His heir was his son Edward, born about 1513.

In the Sussex VCH (6, pt. 1: sub Washington), a James Byne held land at Rowdell in the late 1400s:

In 1498 the estate was in the hands of the lord of the rape because of the minority of Thomas Byne, grandson and heir of James Byne.

This Thomas seems to be a different Thomas from the one above (who had an elder brother alive in 1498), and was presumably the Thomas of this page.

But they seem closely connected (beyond both marrying Joans and dying within a few months of each other). The step-father (Edward Cooke) and a trustee (Richard Shirley) of the first Thomas are overseers of the will of Thomas of this page. Also, John Goring, another trustee of the first Thomas, shows up in the will of the second.
