Commentary
Margaret’s parentage:
Margaret’s 1860 marriage registration records her parents as “Saml D” and “Janet Flachart”.
The 1901 census give her birthplace as Scotland and her date of birth as “28 Sept 1834”. The 1911 census also gives her birthplace as Scotland and her date of birth as “Sept 1834”.
The blotter register in the Laurieston Reformed Presbyterian Church in Falkirk, Scotland, records the baptism 18 January 1835 of Margaret Duncan, daughter of Samuel Duncan, smith of Redding. Samuel had several children baptized at Laurieston between 1826 and 1839, most of whom appear in Samuel’s family in the 1841 census in Muiravonside, Stirlingshire (which is near Laurieston). In that census, Samuel’s wife is named Janet. Samuel Duncan of Muiravonside and Janet Flockhart were married in 1825. The banns were read both at Muiravonside and at Dumbarton.
The informant for Margaret’s marriage and the 1901 and 1911 censuses was almost certainly Margaret herself.
Since Margaret gave her birth month as September twice in censuses, but it appears as December in her baptism record, is was likely misheard by the minister as “December” at her baptism. This is made more likely by the fact that Margaret was baptized in January. Most children baptized in January would have been born in December.
There is extensive supporting DNA evidence that Margaret is the daughter of Samuel Duncan and Janet Flockhart. I am a paper-trail descendant of Margaret, and I share DNA with at least 40 paper-trail descendants of Margaret’s siblings Archibald, Janet, Robert, and William. 15 of the matches are for more than 20 cM, and a few are for more than 30 cM.
The evidence for Margaret’s parentage is sufficient.
