Harriot Nugent

Events

Date of Birth: 31 Dec 1728.

The birth date comes from the parish register entry for the baptism.

Date of Baptism: 21 January 1728/29.

Place of Baptism: St James, Westminster, Middlesex, England.

The date and place come from the parish register entry for the baptism. This must be the correct baptism for these reasons:

(1) Harriot Nugent was a rare, possibly unique, name in England in the 18th century, before the main Irish immigration. The Harriot of this page seems to be the only person with this name in the FamilySearch index in the time period in England.

(2) Her father’s name, Henry, is already known from his Bank of England will extract, which mentions his daughter, “Harriot Johnson (wife of Benjamin Johnson).”

(3) The same Bank of England will extract refers to Harriot’s father, Henry Nugent as “of Lincoln’s Inn, Gent”, and the letters of administration describe him as “late of the parish of St John Southwark.” During the administration in 1774, a witness was produced to certify that the “Henry Nugent by the different descriptions within mentioned was the Same person.” So it is clear that Harriot’s father Henry had earlier resided in Lincolns Inn. Henry Nugent and Hannah Webb were married at Lincolns Inn Chapel in 1725. It is probable that Henry began his dealings with the Bank of England in 1724, when his mother gave him £340.

Date of Burial: 19 October 1783.

Place of Burial: Southwark, Surrey, England (Saint John Horsleydown).

The burial is recorded in the parish register (“Hariot Johnson”).

Relationships

Father: Henry Nugent (1697/98 - 1773).

Harriot’s father’s name is given in her baptism record, and her father’s Bank of England will extract mentioned above makes his identity clear.

Mother: Hannah Webb.

Harriot’s baptism record gives her mother’s name as “Hannah.” The surname Webb is given by Hannah and Henry’s marriage record.

Spouse: Benjamin Johnson (perhaps 1731 - 1784). Married 6 December 1753, Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire. (Holy Trinity)

Given that “Harriot Nugent” was a rare name in England in the 18th century -- Benjamin Johnson’s wife is the only known person with that name in the period, this must be the marriage. The middle name "Hewling" given to one of the couple's children was also given by their daughter Emily to one of her children, although there was also a connection to that name through her husband's family. It is unknown what brought Harriot to Yorkshire. There is a 5 December 1753 allegation and marriage bond for the marriage, and the marriage is recorded in the bishops' transcripts of the parish register.
