Alice Townsend

Events

Date of Birth: about 1556.

Place of Birth: probably Lighthorne, Warwickshire.

There is a gap in the Lighthorne registers from 1554 to 1558, and Alice seems to have been born about then. Her uncle Allan Townsend's wills makes a bequest to "the three children of John Townsend (that is) Joan, Alice, & Agnes." Joan was baptized in 1548 and Agnes in 1558. In 1551 a daughter who did not survive was baptized, and in 1553 a daughter, Ellen, mentioned elsewhere in Allan's will was baptized.

Date of Burial: 20 June 1621.

Place of Burial: Lighthorne.

The burial is recorded in the parish register.

Relationships

Father: John Townsend.

Alice's father is named in her uncle Allan Townsend's will and in her uncle Richard Townsend's will.

Eleanor is named in her burial record.

Spouse: John Harber. Married 6 October 1578 in Lighthorne.

The marriage is recorded in the parish register.

Evidence

from the Lighthorne parish register:

[1578, Weddings] A.o 1578 . die. 6. octobris. Jo Harber et Aelicia Townsend

[1621] Alice Harbar buryed the xx: day of June :/.

In the 1610 probate inventory of John Townsend of Lighthorne, most of the appraisers have some connection to Alice Townsend: Ralph Lees (an overseer of her husband's 1616 will), Thomas Mason (her husband's sister's husband), John Harbert (her husband). John Townsend's widow was named Dorothy [Chapman]. Since they were married in 1586, perhaps John was Alice's brother.
