Indented exchange between Roger de Chedle [Cheadle], knight, and Alan Bercator [Shepherd] of Clifton [Cheshire], and Matilda, his wife, by which Roger grants to Alan and Matilda a messuage and assart in Timperley [Cheshire], previously held by Robert Fayrchilde, in exchange for the land that Alan and his wife had in Clifton from Richard, son of Adam le Thrower. For this, Alan and Matilda shall pay 5s 4½d per year to Roger. If they die without heirs, the messuage and assart shall remain to Adam le Thrower, and if he dies without heirs, it shall remain to Roger and his heirs. Maud, late the wife of Roger de Chedlee.

Writ of certiorari to the bailiffs of Maclesfeld, on the complaint of William de Baggeleye {alias de Bagylegh] and Clemence his wife, and Richard de Bulkele [alias de Bulkylegh] and Agnes his wife, that the said bailiffs had removed them from the manor of Chedle, which they had entered after the death of the said Maud, who held the same for life of the inheritance of the said Clemence and Agnes, 18 July, 20 Edward II.

Chester.  Inq. Wednesday after St. Laurence, 20 Edward II.

Chedlee. The manor was held by the said Maud for life and not otherwise. It is held of the king in chief by service of a knight's fee, and is of the inheritance of the said Clemence and Agnes, who are of full age. The bailiff seized the manor into the king's hand after the death of the said Maud, because of the death of the said Roger who held it of the king, and by whose assignment the said Maud held it.

Inq. p. m. taken before the Bailiff of Macclesfeld, at Chedle, the Wednesday next after the feast of St. Lawrence [Aug. 10], 20 Edward II. [1326], by the oaths of Roger de Vernon, Jordan de Vernon, Richard de Neuton, Richard del Ringeway, Robert de Colshagh, Thomas del Hulegh, William Willot, Thomas de Swetenham, John le Mascy, Richard le Mascy, and Robert de Stopport, who say that Matilda, who was the wife of Roger de Chedle, held the manor of Chedle for the term of her life, and that the manor is held of the King by the service of one knight’s fee. And that the said manor belongs to the heirs, Clemence, the wife of William de Bagulegh, and Agnes, the wife of Richard de Bulkelegh, both of full age, the said manor being worth per annum £30.
