Toumanoff guesses that he was the elder brother of Ashot I Bagratuni, and son of Varaztirots I, and died young, since Ashot I Bagratuni is attested in 555, and his son Pap was a military leader in 596, and yet Manuel’s son Smbat IV Bagratuni was the head of the family.  (Toumanoff pp. 337-338, Settipani p. 571).
