Will of James Lydbrook of Burton Dassett

James made his will in 1658 and it was proved in 1666. Nathaniel, along with John Ledbrook, took the inventory in 1658. Nathaniel is not mentioned in the will, but John is probably mentioned as "my brother John Ledbrook", made an overseer along with Robert Ledbrook (relationship unspecified). James's widow Mary had died before the will was proved, and administration was given to James's daughter Susanna. Nathaniell Ledbrooke, described as a yeoman and as a husbandman, of Burton Dassett, relationship to the family unspecified, was named along with Susanna in the letters of administration. Susanna left a 1675 will in which she mentioned her sister, Elizabeth Dodd.

Commentary

The relationship with William is based on these considerations:

  • The 1700 will of Frances Morrell of Kingston near Chesterton mentions his brothers in law Joseph Ledbrook and William Ledbrook.

  • The 1702 will of Nathaniel Ledbrook of Kingston near Chesterton mentions his brother Joseph Ledbrook, and a witness was William Ledbrook.

  • In a 1694 deed, Nathaniel’s father Nathaniel had given all his property to his son William Ledbrook of Northend. The elder Nathaniel had a son Joseph born in 1669.

  • Dorothy Ledbrook, widow of Kingston, was buried in Burton Dassett in 1718.

  • William Ledbrook of Northend named one of his children Dorothy.

There appear to have no other Nathaniels or Dorothys with which the ones above could be confused, and the connections to Joseph and the hamlet of Kingston provide further corroboration of the relationship.
