Commentary

There was another Edward Hulgreave having children in Childwall at the same time as the Edward. The Edward of this page married Mary Hinton, moved to Eccleston, and left a 1725 will. The second Edward married Ann Mercer 14 April 1707 in Childwall. Ann was buried 19 October 1717. The parish records do not record the mothers of the children, and before the Edward of this page moved to Eccleston, both families were living in Halewood. Here is my reasoning for assigning children to the family of this page (A) or Edward Hulgreave and Ann Mercer (B):

  • Thomas baptized 21 January 1703/4 in Childwall and buried in 1710 -- (A). Ann had not married yet.

  • Mary baptized 31 January 1705/6 in Childwall -- (A). Mentioned in the 1725 will. Ann had not married yet.

  • Joseph baptized 17 December 1707 in Childwall -- (A). Mentioned in the 1725 will.

  • John baptized 13 April 1708 in Childwall -- (B). Date of baptism suggests a different family from Joseph.

  • Elizabeth baptized 24 July 1709 in Childwall -- (A). Mentioned in the 1725 will.

  • “A child” buried 17 March 1709/10 in Childwall -- (B??). Probably died before baptism. Buried less than 8 months after Elizabeth was baptized.

  • Alice and Margaret baptized 17 January 1710/1 in Childwall -- (A??). Born exactly 9 calendar months after “a child” was buried. On the other hand, there are no recorded burials for Alice and Margaret, while the Alice baptized in 1717 is definitely a member of (A) and Margaret is not mentioned in the 1725 will.

  • Thomas baptized 20 March 1714/5 in Prescot - buried 1717 -- (A). Abode Eccleston.

  • Henry baptized 24 October 1715 -- (B). Abode Halewood.

  • Richard buried 3 May 1716 -- (B). Abode Halewood.

  • Alice baptized 26 December 1717 in Prescot -- (A). Abode Eccleston. Married in St Elphin, Warrington, as was Joseph. Ann is already dead.

  • Edward baptized 8 May 1720 in Prescot --(A). Abode Eccleston. Ann is already dead.
