The date and place are given by Cawley. Richard (p. 26) gives a date of 5 July 866.

Father: Gerard (killed in battle 25 June 841), count of Auvergne.

This relationship is given by Richard (pp. 14-15) and by Dillange.

Mother: unknown.

Rainulf, according to Richard and Cawley, was a son of Gerard’s first wife, whose name is unknown. Dillange (p. 45) gives Gérard's first wife as Hildegarde, a daughter of Louis the Pious. The argument that she was a daughter of Louis the Pious is given by Auzias.


Spouse: Bilchilde, a daughter of Rorico, count of Maine.

This relationship is given by Richard (p. 27) and by Dillange (p. 46), who gives the name Bilchilde and states that she was the widow of Bernard. Le Jan (p. 445) names her Adaltrude.
