This relationship is given by Flanagan (ODNB) and by the Complete Peerage (2:448; 12/2:231).

Mother: unknown.

Eyton remarks (vol. 7, p. 73, fn) that he thinks a daughter of Adam fitz Peter de Birkin was Maud’s mother, because Adam’s brother Roger de Birkyn is described as Maud’s uncle in a land transaction. Further evidence is that Robert le Vavasour is listed before Adam’s sons, except his heir, in the witness list to a grant Adam made to the monks of Pontefract (EYC 3: p. 371). However, the Complete Peerage (12b:231) states that her identity is unknown.
