Relationships

Father: William Stewart.

Mother: Susan Christie.

James’s parents are named in his baptism record. The fact that his sisters were living with James in censuses makes the identification certain.

Spouse: James never married. It possible that he had a child, Jane, with Agnes Fotheringham. (The 1851 census describes the six-month-old Jane Stuart, living with the Fotheringhams in Edinburgh, as a candlemaker’s daughter. James is the only Stewart candlemaker that I can locate in the 1851 census. Jane later emigrated with her mother and step-father to Canada.)

(possible) Children:

(Complete source citations for facts about the children on this page are currently outside of the scope of this project.)

Jane Stuart (Greave) (born 28 August 1850 in Edinburgh - died 13 December 1913 in Muskoka, Ontario, Canada) married (1) George Brewster 13 April 1865 in Innisfil, Simcoe, Canada West; married (2) William Ashdown.
