from the Morning Advertiser (19 January 1837):

LOSS OF THE DUNCAN GIBB, OF DUBLIN. -- We regret to have to announce the loss of the ship Duncan Gibb, belonging to this port. She sailed from Quebec on the 17th of November, and encountered a succession of bad weather, but nothing particular happened until the 5th of December, when in latitude 47. longitude 30. strong gales from the west, the ship scudding under close-reefed maintop-sail and reefed foresail, with a dangerous high sea, the wind increasing to a hurricane. At noon the ship was hove to, and at three P.M. was struck by a broken sea, which carried away the bowsprit, foremast, maintop-mast, bulwarks, &c., which made her become quite unmanageable and leaky, the leaks increasing so much she became water-logged. The crew remained in this perilous situation, subsisting on the small remnant of provisions and water that were saved until the 25th instant, when taken off by the ship Niagra, of Boston, Captain Pike, bound to Liverpool, from Savannah. The crew consisted of 17, and we are sorry to relate that two men were washed overboard, and one boy died in the Niagra that took them off, being completely exhausted from the cold and starvation. Too much praise cannot be given to Captain Pike, his officers, and crew, for their humane and very kind attention to the crew whilst on board the Niagra. The following are the names of the sufferers: -- Samuel Hinds, Whitehaven; Wm. Johnson, Cork; Wm. Carrol, Dublin.
