Owain was illegitimate. Pryce notes that later genealogical sources give his mother as a daughter of the Black Reeve of Rug in Edeirnion. Bartrum (Bleddyn ap Cynfyn 3) shows “Merch uchelwr of Rus yn Swydd Drewen” and a daughter of “Y Maer Du”.
