John’s will:


In the Name of God Amen: The seventh Day of January in the Eight and twentieth yeare of the Reigne of Our Soveraigne Lord Charles the second by the Grace of God of England Scotland France and Ireland King Defender of the Faith etc I John Mills of Desfriness(?) in the Parish of Llandinam in the Countie of Mountgomery and Diocese of Bangor yoman being sicke in Bodie, but of sane mynd and memory, Praised be God, Doe hereby declare my last Will and Testament (revoking all other Wills and Testaments whatsoever by mee at any time heretofore made) in manner and forme following: that is to say) First and principally I commend my Soule to the hands of the Almightie God my Creator Jesus Christ my Redeemer and the holy Ghost my Comforter, stedfastly believing through the mercies of my Creator and the Merits and Passion of my Redeemer to obtaine pardon for my Synns, and to enjoy eternall Blisse in the Kingdome of Heaven, And my Bodie to be buried in Christian Buriall at the Discretion of my Executrix hereafter named: As touching that worldly substance bestowed by God in Mercie on mee, and and reserved with mee till this present time I dispose thereof as followeth: viz I give and devise all my Messuage Tenement and Lands with the Appurtenances called Kefen havod y coed nowe in the possession of mee and my assignes scituate in Henyonivoid(?) in the said County, whereof I am nowe seised unto my loving wife Elianor for the Terme of her naturall life, chargeable with the Payment unto my sonn Francis Mills of the yearly Summe of twentie shillings on the Feast Day of Saint John the Baptist towards the maintenance of my said Sonn Francis, And from and after the decease of the said Elianor unto the said Francis Mills my Sonn for the Terme of his naturall life, And from and after his decease to the heires of his Body lawfully to be begotten, And for default of such issue, to Richard Cleaton my Sonne in Law and Margaret his wife, being my eldest daughter, their heires and assignes forever, Subject to the Payment of the Rents and services yearely issuing due out and forth of the said Premisses to the Lord or Lords of the Fee thereof in respect of the Tenure of the same: Whereas I am seised of certaine Burgages Tenements and Lands Scituate in the Towne and Parish of Llanidloes in the said Countie by force of a certaine Deed of Fee conditionall from my Sonn in Lawe William Lewis and Elianor his wife, subject to be redeemed by repaym’t of the mortgage money being thirtie Pounds with their interest at certaine Dayes of (?) expressed, my will and meaning is, and I doe hereby give and devise the said Burgages and other the Premisses with the appurtenances. As also the said mortgage money (if payable) with their interest pursuant to the said deed unto my Grandchild Richard Lewis (sonn of the said William and Elianor) his heires and assignes forever: Whereas about six yeares agoe Edward Lloyd of Berth:Lloyd in the said County esq:r, in Consideration of fiftie six pounds then to him in hand payd, did demise and grant to mee the said John Mills two serverall messuages Tenements and Lands with the appurtenances, whereof I then was and still am possessed scituate in Dessnevith(?) and Irongonwidd in the said Countie, to hould to mee and my assignes for the Terme of one and twentie yeares, subject to the Payment of the Annuall Rent of one and twentie Pounds six Shillings eight Pence to Dame Ursula Lloyd widdowe during her life, and tenn Shillings in Lieu of Presents and Services yearely and the best Beast at the decease of mee and every other principall Tenant dying possessed thereof to the said Edward Lloyd during the said Terme of one and twentie yeares, And the said Edward Lloyd at the tyme of making of the said Grant and Payment of the said Fiftie six Pounds promised to reduce the said Grant into Lease in Writing under his hand and seale which (...) hee hath neglected, Nowe my will and meaning is, and I doe hereby give and bequeath all the Benefit Interest and Terme of foureteene yeares as yet to come and undetermined of the said Terme of one and twentie yeares in the Premisses aforesaid unto Elianor my said wife, if shee shall soe long live But in case shee the said Elianor should happen to dye before the Expiration of the said Terme of foureteen yeares, Then my Will is and I doe hereby give and bequeath doe much of the said Terme as shall be at such the decease of the said Elianor undetermined unto my said Sonne in Lawe Richard Cleaton and Margaret his wife and either of them, subject to the Payment of the yearely Rents Presents Services and Heriots in fort aforesaid: Item I bequeath to the said Richard Cleaton and Margaret his wife tenn pounds: Item I bequeath to my Grandchildren Sarah and Susan Cleaton their Daughters fortie shillings apeece: Item I bequeath to my Grandchild Samuel Cleaton twentie Shillings: Item, I bequeath to my Grandchild William Davies to put him an Apprentice five pounds: Item I bequeath to my Grandchild Elizabeth Lewis five pounds: Item I bequeath to my Sonne in Lawe Richard Swancott and Anne his wife three pounds: Item I bequeath to my Grandchildren Philipp Jonathan Richard Samuelll Benjamin and Bridget Swancott (Children of the said Richard Swancott) twentie Shillings apeece: Item I bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth Davies for her Part and Portion twelve pence: Item I bequeath to my Sister Mary Mills twentie Shillings: Item I give and bequeath to John Persall my servant fortie Shillings: Item I bequeath to my Neece and Servant Elizabeth Mills twentie shillings: Item I bequeath to the Poore of the Parish of Llandinam aforesaid twentie shillings to be disposed amongst them: Item I give and bequeath unto Elianor my said wife all my Goods and Cattles moveable and unmoveable and alsoe all Debts due to mee by Bills Specialties Bonds or otherwise howsoever from any person or persons whatsoever, chargeable with the Payment of the Severall Legacies before by mee herein bequeathd, And alsoe what reall debt or debts upon my owne accompt are due and owing upon mee to any person or persons whatsoever: And lastly I doe nominate constitute and appoint Elianor my said wife to be sole Executrix of this my last Will and Testament, desiring her to performe the same, and to defray the charge of my Buriall; And I doe alsoe nominate and apoint the said Richard Cleaton (my Sonne in Law) to be sole Supervisor of this my Will: In Witnesse whereof I the said John Mills have to this my present last will and Testament put my hand and Seale the Day and yeare within written: The Persons subscribed being present thereat: The mark of the said John Mills: J Humphreys: Oliver Mills: Maurice Humphrey: William Davies:
